Identity - how long would it take to describe yourself without listing roles, labels or achievements?

We tend to link so much of who we are — our identity — to the roles we take on, the structures we belong to or the labels we carry, that we can sometimes lose sight of who we are beyond them.

a career path

a parental status

a relationship status

a place of residence

a profession or job title

a socioeconomic position

an educational background

Yet if any of those disappeared or shifted, we would still be “ourselves”. Our core self. Our authentic, intrinsic self.

It is where we find our more enduring traits and values — the parts of us that are curious, compassionate, adaptable, honest, loyal, open, resilient.

Roles and labels can change across seasons of life.

Sometimes they can feel constricting.

Separating them from our core identity can help bring back some space.

Our core self is an anchor, a continuous thread.

It is who you are independent of titles.

Independent of performance.

Independent of approval.

Independent of audience.

It’s grounding. It’s calming.

A perspective that brings a quiet ease, a sense of space, a sense of freedom, perhaps.
